Research Collabarations

UCLAN 1991.

Brain Tumour North West 2007.

My collaboration with the University of Central Lancashire started after my appointment as Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Royal Preston Hospital in 1987. Initially in the early Nineties we forged a relationship with the University and developed with Professor Shaw Toxicology.  Subsequently with the help of Professor David Phoenix and Professor Robert Lea the Neuro-Oncology Research work has taken off. We now have the firm foundations and publications are beginning.

In the last two years the collaboration of Brain Tumour North West between UCLAN, Keele, Wolverhampton and Manchester Metropolitan as well as associated beginnings with Liverpool and Manchester Universities and Neuro-Science Units as well as the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases has helped to expand what we hope will become the major Neuro-Oncological Research Unit in the UK. From humble beginnings the foundations appear to be secure with the support of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals and mainly the University of Central Lancashire. I believe that I have been instrumental in facilitating our quest for mainly translational research during this period of time. There are laboratories at both the University and the Hospital and I am pleased to say that our first PhD Neuro-Oncology/Neurosurgical Registrar, Mr Venkat Iyer, has been recently appointment as a Consultant Neurosurgeon with an interest in Neuro-Oncology at the prestigious Bristol Unit at Frenchay Hospital.
