Audits

I have participated in and supervised several audits and have regularly attended audit meetings at the hospitals where I have been employed. I have recently supervised an audit on ‘Thromboprophylaxis in recumbent patients on Orthopaedic Ward’ and have contributed to other audits as well as suggested and initiated some. An interesting audit on ‘Patient satisfaction survey in Orthopaedic Out-Patients’ suggested that the patients at Burnley General Hospital were most unsatisfied with car-parking facilities at the site. The other audits include – use of TED stockings in patients with dementia and management of Torus fractures of distal radius in children. Besides presentations in the local and regional audit meetings, some of the audits have been presented at National meetings.

Present Research

  • Precision guiding instrument for per-cutaneous cannulated screw fixation of impacted femoral neck fractures – a clinical trial

Research Experience

  2. Comparison between Cloxacillin and Clindamycin in treatment of Acute Osteomyelitis and Septic Arthritis

Commendations

For outstanding service as Senior-Resident(Registrar) at Batra Hospital & Medical Research Centre, New Delhi for the year 1988-89.

Awards

Charnley Prize 1994, The North West Orthopaedic Club Meeting for: Comparative Study of Closed Reduction versus Closed Reduction and per- cutaneous K-Wire fixation in Colles' fracture (A prospective randomised trial)

Patents and Designs (Patents Pending / Granted)

  1. UK Patent application number: 0412222.2 Bone-plate for inter-fragmentary fixation of fractures (Inter-fragmentary compression plate – IF plate).

This plate obviates the need to counter-sink the screw head, in circumstances where the inter-fragmentary screw needs to be placed on bone at the site where the bone-plate is subsequently placed. This is usual in oblique fractures or in fixation of butterfly fragment. A UK manufacturer of Orthopaedic Implants is developing the device

  2. Precision Guiding Instrument for per-cutaneous placement of parallel screws in impacted femoral neck fractures:

This instrument which has been manufactured by a British company allows easier placement of parallel screws in the femoral neck per-cutaneously. The trial of this instrument has recently been started and outcome data is awaited

Administrative Experience

I have participated in preparing the on-call rotas for Registrars and SHO's in my jobs.  My professional relations with members of the staff and my colleagues have always been good. As a consultant I have participated in organising departmental meetings towards continuing medical education and encouraged trainees to undertake research activities.

Directorate Meetings: I have been able to participate in and regularly attend the Directorate meetings of the units I have worked in. I have also attended consultant meetings, both of which are integral part of service development. I have taken these meetings as opportunity to discuss and raise issues related both to clinical and administrative matters, to enhance the service and care provided to patients.
